The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 signed on February 17, 2009, by President Obama has made significant changes to homeowner tax credits for specified energy-efficient home improvements including qualifying, residential water heaters.

How does this affect Rinnai :
  • The tax credit for qualifying water heaters has been modified from $300 to 30% of the full purchase and installation price up to $1500.
  • The tax credits for 2009 have been extended through Dec. 31, 2010.
  • The maximum tax credit amount a homeowner can receive for all qualifying home improvements has been raised from $500 to $1500 over the lifetime of the credit (2009-2010).

To reduce the amount of water you use, low-flow and aerator faucets and shower heads are an easy and obvious choice. Low-flow and ultra-low-flow toilets are also a simple and effective way to reduce the amount of water you are literally flushing down the drain.

While many of these options might cost more up front, the savings on your water bill will make up for it in no time. These are rather minimal changes that you can do yourself in many cases, and they can save as much as 50% of the water used by regular plumbing fixtures.

There are ways to save even more water in the bathroom, if you’re feeling a bit bolder:
    • Faucets that use sensors to shut off while you’re lathering your hands can save up to 70% of the water used by manual faucets, which can equate to as much as a gallon per use!
    • Dual-Flush and High Efficiency Toilets are another big water saver: Dual Flush units have two handles, one that uses 0.8 gallons to flush urine, and another that uses 1.6 gallons for solid waste, as opposed to the nearly three gallons used per flush by conventional toilets. The High Efficiency toilets only use 1.28 gallons per flush.
    High Efficiency Toilet Water Savings
The average American flushes 5 times a day at home. Assuming an average household of 3.2 people and 16 flushes per day over the course of 365 days

Gallons per FlushTotal Gallons / YearGallons Saved / Year with HET
    5.5 GPF toilet: 32,120 24,665
    3.5 GPF toilet: 20,440 12,965
    1.6 GPF toilet: 9,344 1,869
    1.28 GPF toilet: 7,475

The Positive impact of High Efficiency Toilet technology is substantial and significant: The average household can conserve up to nearly 25,000 gallons of water annually with HET

    • On Demand Hot Water Circulation System can save thousands of gallons of water per year. Statistics show the average household wastes over 16,000 gallon of water per year waiting on hot water. On demand hot water not only saves our water supply but will save you money in your water and waste utility bills. These circulating systems can be installed on new and existing homes.
    • Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Unit will save on plastic waste by eliminating the need for bottled water in your home. Recycling plastic is great but it is even better when we do away with the need for the plastic to start with. 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to bottle water every year and toxic chemicals can be released into the environment during the manufacture and disposal of bottles so the Reverse Osmosis makes perfect sense to do your part in decreasing plastic waste. It also will make the trips to the grocery store a lot easier on your back and on your wallet
    • Getting Leaks Fixed 13.7% of indoor water usage is attributed to leaks. Running toilets, dripping faucets and maybe even a leak under your floor or in the yard service supplying the home. Stopping running toilets and leaky faucets is an inexpensive water to conserve water.
    • Rainwater Recycling for yard irrigation is gaining popularity. Outdoor Irrigation constitutes about 37% of residential water usage
    • Tankless Water Heaters may not save water but they will save considerable amounts of wasted energy heating and re-heating water in tanks when there is no need for hot water. A tankless water heater only heats the water when needed. Great for energy conservation and great for your pocket book and tankless units are never ending hot water, they will produce hot water as long as a valve is open – never running out of hot water again is a side benefit with this product.
